A space for collaboration and file sharing with maximum data security? The Hamburg-based start-up fuse.space makes it possible - and shows the content industry the way forward.

Networking and collaboration is a key element for success in the content industry. But how can digital collaboration succeed when the security of your own content has to be a top priority? The Hamburg-based start-up fuse.space, which was founded in 2020 by two founders with many years of experience in the music industry, provides the answer for creators: A platform that makes it easy to share content and collaborate while using blockchain technology to ensure that every piece of content that is shared can be traced back to the creator and that every step of the process is traceable.

"A chain of the creative process is created, so to speak. We secure this on the blockchain so that it can be verified. This means that users can trace back at any time who they sent which file to and when or what happened to it in the further course of a collaboration."

Seamless documentation through the blockchain

Anyone who shares files with others on fuse.space can seamlessly track this process. Not only with the help of timestamps that show when a file was sent - the file itself and all accesses or downloads can also be accessed on fuse.space. If artists share files via fuse.space and their intellectual property is subsequently infringed, they have a valuable resource in a potential legal dispute. But the very fact that the collaboration is meticulously tracked makes copyright infringements less likely.

The idea is based on the experiences of fuse.space team members themselves, as well as countless creative people from their environment: "Alex, our co-founder Alex Kuplowski, has lost intellectual property himself. And from surveys that we initiated, we know that he is not alone in this. 31% of creators have already had disputes involving their intellectual property. As is common in the industry, Alex has used platforms such as WeTransfer or Dropbox and sent his music to other artists. Two or three of these songs were then published by a well-known pop star without his consent. His problem was that he had no proof because WeTransfer and Dropbox don't track what you've shared. We also have a producer on board who sends his beat packs to 20 or 30 people every month via Dropbox - and unfortunately has to go to court more often as a result. But that's just the way creative people work together, and sharing is incredibly important in the creative process."

In six batches, we at Media Lift have already supported a large number of innovative teams and projects. From content to tech - here is an overview of the exciting ideas that have emerged as part of our program.

Security instead of the principle of trust - how fuse.space enables limitless networking

Until now, collaboration in the creative industry has been based almost exclusively on the principle of trust: creative professionals only work with those they trust. And this also means that the possibility of collaboration between creatives is limited - and this is how the second dimension of fuse.space as a digital workspace came about. After all, a platform that enables creators to track their collaboration digitally also invites them to network with more and more creators, exchange ideas with each other, gain new inspiration and bring projects to life.

"With our platform, we want to enable people around the world to create together easily, freely and safely - without even having to get to know each other first," says Angkasa about the vision behind fuse.space. "On fuse.space, I can network with someone in South Africa, Asia or any other country. We have built a workspace that covers the most important collaborative processes of creative people: a lot of communication, but also data exchange."

And this possibility of data exchange is not only interesting for the traditional creative industry, but also for the media industry in general: journalists can use fuse.space to work together on research. Not only is the respective data secure, but the progress of the research can always be easily tracked and reconstructed using the tracking function in the app.

"With our platform, we want to enable people around the world to create together easily, freely and safely - without even having to get to know each other first."

How fuse.space is financed

fuse.space works with a freemium model: This means that the service is free to use and creating an account is easy, which corresponds to the platform as a collaboration tool and the highly viral market. Users can start using the platform very easily and at no cost. Further features, such as additional storage space, will be made available later for premium accounts. Until then, fuse.space is financed as a start-up in the pre-seed phase via investments and was already supported by many funding bodies before participating in the fifth batch of our MEDIA LIFT incubator. These included the Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft's incubator for start-ups in the music and tech sector, Music WorX, and the IFB's Innovation Starter.
